NA committee on culture stresses ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly Standing Committee on Culture here Tuesday urged for representing the culture of all the four provinces at Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA) to create understanding among the people of diverse backgrounds. During a meeting with the officials of Ministry of Culture and PNCA, the committee members highly appreciated the role of PNCA in preserving the visual and performing arts of Pakistan under one roof. The committee unanimously passed a resolution for the extension of Naeem Tahir as Director General PNCA for 3 years to serve the institution with an artist of a complete understanding of visual and performing arts. In another resolution, the committee said that the National Art Gallery has preserved priceless cultural assets and their protection should be ensured with insurance of paintings and other art pieces. The Chairman of the committee, Muhammad Raza Hayat Hiraj, said, "A rich historical society is preserved here and the management of PNCA should take measures for facilitating common man to get maximum advantage of the art scenes." The Chairman also asked the ministry of culture to improve the security of the buildings as it was a major art institution of the capital for which the Secretary Culture, Moin ul Islam Bukhari, assured the members to take proper security measures around the building. The committee recommended that an enclave on `Sufism' should be established at the National Art Gallery to provide the visitors with the great symbols of peace for creating harmony in the society. The members of the committee stressed the need for establishing a museum at Northern Areas to preserve the centuries old rock carvings discovered from various mountainous sites and have a great importance for the geographical aspect of the country. The Director General PNCA, Naeem Tahir briefed the visiting members about the overall functioning of various departments od visual and performing arts at PNCA. In a multi media presentation, Naeem Tahir gave the introduction, performance and objectives of PNCA in the field of arts, crafts, preservation of cultural values, theater and the status of artisans in the country. About the new projects of PNCA, the members were informed about the establishment of National Center for Performing Arts, Shakarparian, National Theater, National Film Academy, laboratory for restoration of arts, archives of films, classical music academy and cultural centers at Northern Areas, Karachi, NWFP, US, UK and China. The multi media presentation also highlighted the glimpses of various recently held festivals at National Art Gallery. The Chairman of the Committee on the occasion, inaugurated the website of PNCA which would serve as a complete informative source of the culture ministry on Pakistani culture education and traditions. Earlier, the members of the committee visited the galleries of the PNCA and took keen interest in the exhibitions of rock carvings, paintings, magnificent wood carvings and many other displays. The members also lauded the efforts of PNCA for organizing the photographic exhibition of Benazir Bhutto Shaheed and screening of documentary on the life of the great leader.
